Las enfermedades cardiovasculares, y concretamente la cardiopatía isquémica, se encuentran entre las principales causas de morbilidad y mortalidad en todo el mundo.
La angioplastia coronaria transluminal percutánea (ACTP) con colocación de endoprótesis, es decir de uno o varios stent coronarios, revolucionó el tratamiento de la enfermedad arterial coronaria y hoy en día es el método más común de revascularización coronaria, tanto de manera convencional como urgente.
La elección del tipo de stent coronario dependerá de las características clínicas del paciente y del tipo de lesión o lesiones significativas existentes. Para su elección existen básicamente 3 tipos o modelos. Hay que destacar el tratamiento farmacológico continuo de doble antiagregación plaquetaria que debe de seguir el paciente tras la inserción del stent.
