¿Qué legitimaba para un habitante de Buenos Aires de principios del siglo XIX el poder? ¿Cuáles eran los signos que percibía y anotaba? ¿Cómo se trasformaron esos signos y cuál fue su valoración al respecto? Estos interrogantes y otros similares son los que justifican el presente trabajo. La transición que vive Juan Manuel Beruti (1777-1856) —autor de las conocidas Memorias curiosas— desde una sociedad colonial, cuyas formas exigían la representación pública del orden, a una primigenia sociedad republicana, que intenta arduamente modificar conductas e imaginarios políticos, es de central interés para comprender la modificación de sentidos de las prácticas y formas de representación; el minucioso registro que deja este testigo de las alteraciones en los sistemas de producción de bienes simbólicos y en los espacios públicos nos permitirá dar cuenta de cómo comienza a transformarse en este período la forma de pensarse y representarse.

What made power legitimate for a Buenos Aires inhabitant in the early XIX century? Which were the symbols that he perceived and made notes of? How were such symbols transformed? How did he assess the value of those symbols and their transformation? These and some other similar questions justify the present work. In order to understand the change in the meanings attached to the forms and practices of representation, it is particularly interesting to examine the transition that Juan Manual Beruti (1777-1856) —the author of the very well-known Memorias Curiosas—experienced since a colonial society, which demanded the public representation of order, to an incipient republican society which was struggling to modify the political thinking and practices. The detailed and exhaustive register that Beruti has left of the alterations in the system of production of symbolic goods, and those occurred in public places, will let us account for the beginning of transformation of the way of thinking and representation in this period.
