Resumen de 'Secundum' + NP: a cognitive account of the spatiotemporal domains including logical extensions of space

  This article fills a gap in the literature on Latin prepositions, by presenting a corpus-based analysis of the spatio-temporal meanings of secundum + noun phrase throughout the history of Latin (BC 106 – AD 704). This study also considers those meanings belonging to the domain of logical relations which stem out of the space domain (ranking and beneficiary). An isolated instance of the distribution meaning is also discussed and analysed as a possible calque from Greek. My analysis, carried out within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, emphasises the role of construal (viewpoint, plexity, granularity, metaphor) in accounting for the various meanings examined and their relations. Finally, my study shows that the spatio-temporal meanings decline over time, whereas more schematic meanings take over, which is consistent with a wealth of case studies within grammaticalisation theory.

  Cet article comble une lacune dans les travaux sur les prépositions latines en présentant une analyse, fondée sur un corpus, des significations spatio-temporelles de secundum + syntagme nominal à travers l’histoire du latin (106 av. J.-C. – 704 apr. J.-C.). Cette étude prend en considération les significations appartenant au domaine des relations logiques qui découlent du domaine spatial (classement et bénéficiaire). Un cas isolé de la signification distributionnelle est également étudié et analysé comme un possible calque du grec. Mon analyse, s’inscrivant dans le courant de la linguistique cognitive, souligne le rôle de l’interprétation (« construal ») (point de vue, plexity, granularité, métaphore) afin de prendre en compte les diverses significations relevées ainsi que leurs relations. Enfin, mon étude montre que le nombre des significations spatio-temporelles diminue au fil du temps, alors que les significations plus schématiques prennent le dessus, ce qui correspond aux tendances constatées dans de nombreuses études de cas dans le cadre de la théorie de la grammaticalisation.
