A década de 1970 é identificada como a da retomada da teoria institucional nas ciências sociais. Desde então, pesquisas em diferentes áreas, como na ciência política, na economia e na sociologia, reavivaram o interesse pelas instituições como elementos determinantes para o entendimento da realidade social. No Brasil, a teoria institucional vem sendo crescentemente adotada como base para estudos empíricos. Embora o visível crescimento do número de trabalhos empíricos sob a abordagem sugira a emergência de um campo de pesquisa relativamente forte, considera-se importante que discussões teóricas sejam também realizadas por pesquisadores brasileiros de modo a que se possa ocupar espaço no campo da produção do conhecimento e não meramente de sua reprodução. Este artigo pretende contribuir com a discussão teórica, recuperando as origens da teoria institucional, situando as principais temáticas e formas de abordagens em suas versões originais, surgidas em fins do século XIX, contrapondo-as às versões do final da década de 1970. O argumento central é que, nesse percurso, houve uma inflexão da teoria para uma orientação conservadora e que isso, por si só, deveria representar uma preocupação da intelligentsia no Brasil

The 1970s are identified as the decade when institutional theory was resumed in social sciences. Since then, researches in different fields such as political science, economics and sociology have revived the interest in institutions as vital elements for understanding the social reality. In Brazil, institutional theory has been more and more used as the basis for empirical studies. Although the increasing number of empirical studies using this approach suggests the emergence of a relatively strong research field, it is important that Brazilian researchers discuss it on a more theoretical level in order to produce knowledge and not merely reproduce it. This article intends to contribute to the theoretical discussion, recovering the origins of institutional theory, contextualizing the first topics and approaches in their original versions of the end of the 19th century and contrasting them with those of the end of the 1970s. The article’s core argument is that the theory has assumed a conservative orientation, which should be an object of concern for the Brazilian intelligentsia.
