La préface chez Paulhan, lieu de la critique ?

    If one of the parts played by the preface writer is to provide the reader with the tools to facilitate a relevant reading, Paulhan rather seems to devote himself to non plussing the latter : the preface of ten turns into the statement of the unfathomable mystery of the work to come. Moreover, the prefaces he made form a changing, heterogeneous corpus, from the note in a review to the paratextual element. We tried to wonder if the prefaces in spite of everything constituted a possible place for criticism which would « make up for » the absence of monograph written by Paulhan about the cherished writers.

    Si l’un des rôles du préfacier est de donner au lecteur les armes pour faciliter une lecture pertinente, Paulhan semble plutôt s’employer à désarçonner celui-ci : la préface aboutit souvent au constat de l’insondable mystère de l’oeuvre à venir. D’autre part, les préfaces qu’ils a signées forment un corpus mouvant et hétéroclite, de la note en revue à l’élément paratextuel. Nous avons cherché à nous demander si celles-ci constituaient malgré tout un lieupossible de la critique qui « compenserait » l’absence de monographie écrite par Paulhan sur les écrivains aimés.
