The article deals with Strabo’s description of Middle Europe. Its first part lines out general principles, which shaped Strabo’s mental map, pointing out the geometric-cartographic perspective that his description was based upon. The second part comments the empirical description, esp. of the Germanic tribes, which is put into this overall framework. The third part shows Strabo’s intense familiarity with and understanding of the political and military constellations of his time, with regard to geography and his dealing with Germania.
