La importancia de la investigación en Enfermería se realiza a lo largo de su historia otorgando de esta manera a la disciplina Enfermera un cuerpo de conocimiento científico propio que la hace capaz de evolucionar al mismo tiempo que lo hace el pensamiento científico general. Para ello es importante la contextualización histórica y el marco legislativo de la disciplina Enfermera desde sus inicios hasta la actualidad. Se observa que la evolución de la Enfermería como disciplina y la Enfermería basada en la evidencia científica (EBE) van de la mano, dicho binomio hace que sea de vital importancia realizar una reflexión constante de nuestra profesión. De este modo mantener un progreso del conocimiento científico que sustenta a la disciplina Enfermera y la importancia de trasladar esos conocimientos a las diferentes funciones propias de la Enfermería; ya sea como labor asistencial, administrativa, docente, investigadora o gestora, pone de manifiesto la necesidad de adquirir un cuerpo de conocimientos consistentes y de calidad.

The importance of research in Nursing has been highlighted throughout its history, thus granting the Nursing discipline a body of its own scientific knowledge that makes it capable of evolving at the same time as general scientific thought. For this, the historical contextualization, and the legislative framework of the Nursing discipline from its beginnings to the present is important. It is observed that the evolution of Nursing as a discipline and Nursing based on scientific evidence (EBE) go hand in hand. This pairing makes it vitally important to constantly reflect on our profession. In this way, maintain a progress of scientific knowledge that supports the Nursing discipline and the importance of transferring that knowledge to the different functions of Nursing; either as care, administrative, teaching, research, or managerial work, it highlights the need to acquire a body of consistent and quality knowledge.
