    En este ensayo se analiza la figura del arzobispo de Manila, fray Felipe Pardo, OP (1677- 89), y en especial, sus conflictivas relaciones con los jesuitas. Lamentablemente, el prelado no ha merecido la atención de los estudiosos, salvo notables excepciones. Las razones son varias. Una, la “leyenda negra” que acompaña al colonialismo español en las Filipinas. Otra, la fidelidad gremial de los historiadores, ya fuera al “bando jesuita” o a sus acérrimos enemigos que aumentaron a raíz de la difusión de la Mónita privata de 1614 (a partir de la edición holandesa de 1654, Mónita secreta) y que agrupaba tanto a los dominicos y miembros de otras órdenes religiosas como a varios seglares y jansenistas. Manila no fue una excepción a esta “nebulosa anti-jesuita” que se extendió por toda Europa y las Indias.

    This essay analyzes the figure of the archbishop of Manila, Fray Felipe Pardo, OP (1677-89), and especially his conflictive relations with the Jesuits. Unfortunately, the prelate has not deserved the attention of scholars, with notable exceptions. There are several reasons for this. One, the “black legend” that accompanies Spanish colonialism in the Philippines. Another is the union loyalty of historians, either to the “Jesuit side” or to their bitter enemies who increased as a result of the diffusion of the Mónita privata of 1614 (from the Dutch edition of 1654, Mónita secreta) and which brought together Dominicans and members of other religious orders as well as several laymen and jansenistas. Manila was no exception to this “anti-Jewish nebula” which spread throughout Europe and the Indies.
