Resumen de Revisió de l’espècie Cottaldia royoi Lambert, 1928 (Echinoidea) de l’Aptià de la conca del Maestrat

  Lambert va descriure el 1928 l’espècie Cottaldia royoi de l’Aptià de Morella (conca del Maestrat) i des d’aleshores no s’ha revisat. És una espècie molt poc corrent. Lambert, per estudiar-la, només va disposar de dos exemplars, les condicions dels quals no li van permetre descriure alguns elements bàsics (sistema apical, peristoma, solcs branquials), cosa que dificulta l’assignació supraespecífica. L’holotip, originalment dipositat al museu Nacional de Ciències Naturals de Madrid, s’ha perdut. L’objectiu del treball se centra en completar la descripció, comprovar l’assignació genèrica, designar un neotip i dipositar material en institucions accessibles als investigadors que en aquest moment no disposen de cap exemplar. El treball s’emmarca en un projecte global per millorar el coneixement de la classe Echinoidea a la conca sedimentària del Maestrat. Com a resultat de l’estudi de tots els exemplars que s’han pogut examinar, es completa la descripció original amb els detalls del sistema apical i el peristoma, el qual presenta un dibuix dels solcs branquials que resulta un caràcter diagnòstic per a l’espècie. Se l’ha dotat d’una diagnosi tant en català com en anglès. Com a conclusió de la recerca realitzada, s’ha considerat l’espècie valida i, atès que no es podia assignar a cap gènere existent, se’n descriu un de nou: Maestratina. Fins ara, aquesta espècie només s’ha trobat a la localitat tipus: sembla tractar- se, doncs, d’un endemisme de la conca del Maestrat. Aquest treball completa la descripció i figuració d’una espècie molt escassa. Es millora la seua conservació patrimonial en haver dipositat material al museus. Se n’ha modificat l’assignació genèrica i precisat l’edat estratigràfica. S’ha designat un neotip, atesa la pèrdua de l’holotip i descrit un gènere nou dins la família Arbaciidae Gray, 1855, al mateix temps que s’apunta la inconsistència d’una part de la sistemàtica del superordre Echinacea Claus, 1876. Es contribueix a la millora del coneixement de la classe Echinoidea Leske, 1778 a la conca sedimentària del Maestrat. Es fa una recordatori, a manera d’homenatge, dels treballs pioners per a la conca del equinòleg francès Jules Lambert (Sens, 1848 - Chesnay, 1940) i la llavor instigadora del geòleg castellonenc Josep Royo i Gómez (Castelló de la Plana 1895 - Caracas 1961).

  Lambert described the species Cottaldia royoi from the Aptian of Morella (Maestrat basin) in 1928 and it has not been revised since. It is a very uncommon species. The specimens that Lambert worked on were in poor condition and this prevented him from describing some basic elements (apical system, peristome, buccal notches) and also made it difficult to assign a supraspecific level. The holotype, which should be in the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, has been lost. The objective of this work is to focus on completing the description, checking the generic assignment, designating a neotype and depositing specimens in institutions accessible to researchers for further investigation. The work is part of a wider project to improve the knowledge of the Echinoidea class in the Maestrat sedimentary basin.

  After examining the specimens, the original description is completed with the details of the apical system and the peristome together with the drawing of the buccal notches that are a diagnostic character for the species. A diagnosis in both Catalan and English is given. The research concludes that the species must be considered valid and since it could not be assigned to any current genus, a new one (Maestratina gen. n.) is described. So far, this species has only been found in the typical locality thereby appearing endemic to the Maestrat basin. This paper completes the description and figuration of a very uncommon species. Its heritage conservation is improved by depositing specimens in museums. The generic assignment has been changed and the stratigraphic age specified. A neotype has been designated due to the loss of the holotype. A new genus has been described within the family Arbaciidae Gray, 1855, while pointing out an inconsistency in part of the systematics of the superorder Echinacea Claus, 1876. All these facts improve the knowledge of the class Echinoidea Leske, 1778 in the sedimentary basin of the Maestrat. We also acknowledge, as a tribute, the research of the pioneers who first studied the basin; the French echinologist Jules Matthieu Lambert (Sens, 1848 – Chesnay, 1940) and the geologist from Castellon Josep Royo i Gómez (Castelló de la Plana 1895; Caracas 1961), who planted the seed.
