    Nueva España fue un centro de consumo y de producción de biombos desde fines del siglo XVI y principios del siglo XVII, respectivamente. El éxito de los biombos en ese ámbito contribuyó a expandir el gusto por ellos en el virreinato del Perú y, hasta cierto punto, en España. A partir de un análisis documental, se revisa la circulación de biombos japoneses y chinos en Nueva España, así como la producción de biombos achinados, prestando atención a la técnica, el precio y otros detalles. Asimismo, se plantean hipótesis sobre el origen de la producción novohispana y se revisa la exportación de obras a Caracas. Se estudian también los biombos de la hija del virrey marqués de Cadereyta y la hija del virrey marqués de Mancera, en busca de indicios sobre el papel de Nueva España en la construcción del gusto español por los biombos.

    New Spain was a consumption center and a production center of folding screens since the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, respectively. The success of folding screens in that ambit contributed to the expansion of the taste for folding screens in the viceroyalty of Peru and, to some extent, in Spain. Based on a documentary analysis, the circulation of Japanese and Chinese folding screens is reviewed, as well as the production of Chinese-style screens, paying attention to techniques, prices, and other details. Hypothesis are proposed about the origin of New Spanish folding screens, and the exportation of copies to Caracas is reviewed. The folding screens of the daughter of the viceroy marchis of Cadereyta and the daughter of the viceroy marchis of Mancera are also studied in pursuit of evidence on the role of New Spain in the building of Spanish taste for folding screens.
