  • Resumen
    • [...]the strengths of this volume are legion, and although the editors reject the “Handbook” genre, it deserves some equivalent status in future studies of Perpetua and her fellow martyrs. The work is primarily philological in its focus and includes “a fresh reading of the manuscripts” (xii). Since Heffernan suggests numerous corrections to modern editions, his work has now surpassed the critical edition of Van Beek, and with the Greek made available in the same volume (but not the Acta, unfortunately), Heffernan will likely earn the status of preferred edition.7 Nonetheless, it is worth noting that some of his interpretations are open to question. [...]I wish to reiterate how the authors reviewed here offer exceptional insights to Perpetua and her fellow martyrs. Perp. to be understood as apocalyptic (12, 117). [...]there is an inconsistency to his logic; after all, the other souls seen in heaven by Saturus (13.8) seem no less “real” than the vision of a multitude by John (Rev 7.9–17), so the same logic should apply to both.
