El presente artículo indaga sobre la presencia de la escuela en la región de la Araucanía desde 1883, hito de la ocupación militar definitiva del territorio por el Estado Chileno, hasta 1910, año del primer centenario de la República de Chile. Su objetivo es analizar el rol de la escuela y su función reproductora de una cultura hegemónica sobre la población mapuche, a través de la acción homogeneizadora de las instituciones escolares. Se abordan las características que adquirió la escuela en la Araucanía, haciendo referencia a los diferentes mecanismos que utilizó el estado de Chile, a través de sus autoridades locales y nacionales, para garantizar el funcionamiento de ésta y el disciplinamiento de los mapuches. Se estudian elementos propios de la escuela como infraestructura, mobiliario, materiales de enseñanza, materias impartidas, financiamiento, subvenciones, acciones de preceptores y visitadores, que reflejan las dinámicas que se establecieron, en el ámbito educativo, entre el Estado Chileno y la población mapuche. El estudio se orienta desde una metodología cualitativa con un diseño historiográfico con alcances descriptivos densos. Se han utilizado fuentes primarias presentes en el Archivo Regional de la Araucanía y fuentes secundarias recientes. Los resultados evidencian que durante la instalación de la escuela en la Araucanía se llevó a cabo un proceso de disciplinamiento y homogeneización con los niños y niñas mapuche que asistían a ésta, cuyo accionar fue clave para sancionar y legitimar un sistema de hábitos y prácticas sociales de la clase dominante.
The present article inquires about the presence of the school in the Araucanía region since 1883, milestone of the definitive military occupation of the territory by the Chilean State, until 1910, the year of the first centenary of the Republic of Chile. Its objective is to analyze the role of the school and its reproductive role of a hegemonic culture over the Mapuche population, through the homogenizing action of school institutions. The characteristics acquired by the school in the Araucanía are addressed, making reference to the different mechanisms used by the State of Chile, through its local and national authorities, to guarantee the functioning of this and the discipline of the Mapuches.
Students study elements of the school such as infrastructure, furniture, teaching materials, subjects taught, financing, grants, actions of preceptors and visitors, which reflect the dynamics that were established, in the field of education, between the Chilean State and the Mapuche population. . The study is oriented from a qualitative methodology with a historiographic design with dense descriptive scopes. Primary sources present in the Regional Archive of the Araucanía and recent secondary sources have been used. The results show that during the installation of the school in Araucanía a process of discipline and homogenization was carried out with the Mapuche children who attended it, whose actions were key to sanction and legitimize a system of social habits and practices of the ruling class.
