In the third volume of "Studi in onore di Riccardo Filangieri(1959)", Raffaelle Mormone (1920-2008) published a study on the appearance of the Church of Santa Chiara before it was heavily bombed on August 4, 1943. His research was based mainly on trial papers held at the Archivio di Stato in Naples. In 1745 the architect Martino Buonocore claimed no small number of credits with the administration of the Santa Chiara convent for the projecting and directing of works there. The documentation, although fragmentary, sheds light not only on what may be considered the most important reconfiguration of a Gothic monument in Naples but also on the relations between clients and architects in Naples in the mid-1700s. Mormone's study, like the one he did on Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, is a veritable 'trailblazer' for a re-examination of the 17th century in Naples, not only in regards to architecture but also for painting and the decorative arts, which at his time were totally lacking in bibliographical references.
