  Aún se intuye en la Montaña Oriental la sombra de aquella tan singular, raza bovina leonesa por excelencia, la mantequera. En el recuerdo de sus gentes revive, tan nítidamente como en esta fotografía que tomó, en la localidad de Cistierna (León), el fotógrafo Dalmacio Callado en los primeros años de la década de los sesenta, inicio de su declive por la introducción de razas foráneas. Uncidas a la manera tradicional dos vacas, de las popularmente bautizadas como mantequeras, aguardan a la entrada del puesto de Gabriel Rodríguez, carretero, oficio igualmente desaparecido. Al fondo, tras el nogal, la sede del Frente de Juventudes, hoy Biblioteca Pública del pueblo y futura sede del Instituto Bíblico y Oriental de León. Tras éste la vivienda de Ángel Cuesta, que fue teniente de alcalde de la localidad, y cuya hija es la niña que corretea en el margen superior izquierdo de la fotografía: Agustina Cuesta.

  The shadow of that unique, exceptional cattle breed from León, the mantequera, can still be sensed on the Eastern Mountain. In the memory of its people revives, as clearly as in this photograph taken in the town of Cistierna (León) in the early 1960s by the photographer Dalmacio Callado, beginning of its decline by the introduction of foreign breeds. Yoked in the traditional way two cows, of the popularly known as mantequeras, await at the entrance of the stand of Gabriel Rodríguez, cartwright, a missed profession as well. In the background, behind the walnut, the headquarters of the Front of Youth, now the town Public Library and future seat of the Biblical and Oriental Institute of León.
