Der Aufsatz analysiert den politischen Gehalt von Juli Zehs Unterleuten (2016) im Kontext der Demokratietheorie und weist allgemein auf die Bedeutung des gegenwärtigen Demokratiediskurses für die Gegenwartsliteraturforschung hin. Der thematisch und erzähltechnisch an Jonathan Franzens Erfolgsroman Freedom (2010) orientierte und zahlreiche Anspielungen auf die ›Krise der Demokratie‹ aufweisende Gesellschaftsroman spannt ein multimediales Verweisnetz auf, das die Grenze von realer und fiktionaler Welt verunklart. Unterleuten ist darauf angelegt, die Problematik der ›Mediendemokratie‹ sichtbar zu machen und insgesamt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Literatur zurückzulenken, der als Organon von Komplexität und Perspektivenvielfalt Zeh zufolge demokratieförderliches Potenzial zukommt.

The article analyzes the political significance of Juli Zeh’s Unterleuten (2016) within the context of democratic theory, and thereby points to the relevance of the current discourse on democracy for contemporary literature more generally. The social novel, which in its theme and narrative technique follows Jonathan Franzen’s successful novel Freedom (2010) and alludes to the so-called ›crisis of democracy‹, is embedded in a multimedia setting, which blurs the boundary between the real and the fictional world. Thus, Unterleuten uncovers the threats of ›media democracy‹ and draws our attention toward literature as an organon of complexity and richness of perspectives which, according to Zeh, has the potential for fostering democracy.
