Neste artigo pretendemos mostra-la historia das traduccións ó catalán e ó castelán do clásico de Willian M. Thakeray Vanity Fair (1847-48). O noso traballo divídese en cinco partes: (1) unha exposición detallada das traduccións de Vanity Fair publicadas en España e en Latinoamérica; (2) os antecedentes profesionais dos traductores e das editoriais que os contrataron; (3) a traducción ó catalan; (4) o papel da traducción indirecta, do plaxio e doutras prácticas ilegais de traducción; (5) a acollida de Thackeray en España e en Cataluña en contraposición a outros novelistas victorianos

In this article we intend to present the history of Spanish and Cata-lan translations of William M. Thackeray's classic Vanity Fair (1847-48). Our work is divided into six sections: (1) a full account of the translations of Vanity Fair published in Spain and Latín America; (2) the professional background of the translators and of the publishing companies which hired them; (3) the Cata-lan translation; ( 4) the role of indirect translation, plagiarism and other illegal practices of translation; (5) the reception of Thackeray in Spain and Catalonia in contrast with other Victorian novelists.
