The quantitative study of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages in Tethyan sections allow us to recognize two acme episodes of triserial guembelitriids after the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) mass extinction event. The first is caused by the genus Guembelitriaand characterized the acme-stage PFAS-1, which spans the first 15,000 years after the K/Pg boundary. The second is caused by the genus Chiloguembelitriaand is placed in the middle part of the acme-stage PFAS-3 (of Woodringinay Chiloguembelina), which ranges from 50,000 to 150,000 years after the K/Pg boundary. TheChiloguembelitriapeak (PFAS-3b) correlates with the hyperthermal episode Dan-C2 of the lower Danian, characterized by the rise in average temperatures of the surface ocean waters around 4°C, and an increase of the eutrophication and acidity thereof.
