  • Resumen
    • Although the notion of root extension is often employed in etymological solutions there have been only a few attempts to structure the heterogeneous array of phenomena described by that notion. The paper offers an attempt to lay grounds for a classification that would account for different sources of root extensions (such as lexicalisation of phonetically conditioned allomorphs, lexicalisation of suffixed stems, contamination of roots with similar meaning, etc.), as well as for the chronological difference between pre-PIE, PIE, and post-PIE phenomena. Whenever a specific case of root variation cannot be unambiguously ascribed to one of the categories multiple scenarios should be accounted for within a unified classification.
