  • Resumen
    • The article presents new hypotheses for the Saint Jean the Baptist Chapel in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, decorated with frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti between 1355 and 1356. First of all, we analyze the constant evolutions of the architectural complex in wich it is inscribed: from the cardinal livery to the favorite residence of the Pope Innocent VI, until it became an important Carthusian establishment. Next we concentrate on the analysis of the frescoes, paying particular attention to the new possibilities of iconographic interpretation and to the phylacteries texts, never before deciphered. In another section of the article we defend the idea that Matteo Giovannetti would have provided the chapel with an altarpiece depicting the Baptism of Christ, in order to complete the iconographical cycle. This opens the possibility that this work served as a model for the altarpieces produced within the Liguria-Provence sphere throughout the 14th century, to the extent of creating a tradition that would come to influence the entire Mediterranean region, leaving its traces there until the end of the 15th century. The study concludes with a focus on the chapel and its ancient function, while giving an interpretation that re-establishes it in its original context as spatial and ideal heart of the complex.
