An objective method has been developed to determine the rarity of minerals, based on quantitative aspects, which will be useful for their systematic classification.
This method is based on some characteristics of each mineral and which are not subject to important changes: the chemical formula that the mineral and the abundance in the Earth's crust of the elements that make it up. This offers a powerful tool, especially for collectors, to assess their collection based on a quantitative, classifiable, consistent, univocal and easy-toobtain parameter: the rarity index, iR. In addition, the article delves into the information provided by the rarity index and explores the possibilities of its application in mineral collecting.
