  • The present article tackles a comparative study of Don Quijote andJoseph Andrews in order to show Fielding's literary indebtedness to Cervantes. The survey is carried through in terms of structure, characterization, and narrative techniques. As far as structure is concerned, the three elements articulating Joseph Andrews (road, inn, house) have been drawn from Don Quijote. As to characterization, Adams and Joseph, Fielding's heroes, are unfolded in their parallelisms with Don Quijote. Finally, several narrative correspondences are provided to illustrate how close Fielding was to Cervantes in his use of metaliterature and literary economy.
