“AMPLIA AYUDA EXTERNA” CONTRA “LA GANGRENA COMUNISTA”: LAS FUERZAS REGIONALES ANTICOMUNISTAS Y LA FINALIZACIÓN DE LA OPERACIÓN PBFORTUNE, OCTUBRE DE 1952

    En contraste con la gran literatura sobre la Operación PBSUCCESS, este artículo explica la historia menos conocida de los esfuerzos de las dictadu- ras autoproclamadas “anticomunistas”, en la cuenca del Caribe para tratar de socavar la Revolución guatemalteca. A través de la revolución, el dicta- dor nicaragüense Anastasio Somoza, el dictador hondureño Tiburcio Carías y el dictador dominicano Rafael Trujillo, financiaron las conspiraciones de varios exiliados guatemaltecos contra los gobiernos de Juan José Arévalo y Jacobo Arbenz. En 1952, estas fuerzas regionales anticomunistas organiza- ron la fundación de la primera conspiración clandestina contra los gobiernos guatemaltecos de Juan José Arévalo y Jacobo Arbenz que recibió el apoyo del gobierno estadounidense y la Agencia Central de Inteligencia (CIA), Operación PBFORTUNE. Como explica el oficial colombiano Eduardo Zuleta Ángel en el memorándum de un oficial dominicano, estos líderes latinoamericanos compartieron y sostenían su propia ideología anticomunis- ta apoyando la Operación PBFORTUNE y el derrocamiento de Arbenz por sus propios motivos.

    In contrast to the vast literature on Operation PBSUCCESS, this article ex- plains the lesser-known history of the efforts of the self-proclaimed “anti- communist” dictatorships in the Caribbean Basin in trying to undermine the Guatemalan Revolution. Throughout the Revolution, Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza, Honduran dictator Tiburcio Carías, and Dominican dic- tator Rafael Trujillo financed the conspiracies of various Guatemalan exiles against the governments of Juan José Arévalo and Jacobo Arbenz. In 1952, these regional anti-communist forces organized the foundation of the first clandestine conspiracy against the Guatemalan government of Arbenz that received the support of the U.S. government and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Operation PBFORTUNE. As Colombian official Eduardo Zuleta Ángel explains in the Dominican official’s memorandum, these Latin American leaders held their own anti-communist ideology and supported Operation PBFORTUNE and the overthrow of Arbenz’s government for their own reasons.
