    La narrativa de Elena Poniatowska tiene un carácter testimonial y la novela Leonora, ganadora del Premio Seix Barral de Novela, se puede incluir dentro del género de la novela biográfica, caracterizada por incluir elementos testimoniales. Estos elementos no son una transcripción y narración de hechos, sino que combinan lo real y la ficción, inspirados en la artista plástica y escritora inglesa Leonora Carrington, quien vivió hasta su muerte en Ciudad de México. Leonora es un viaje por la vida de la artista, quien padeció el exilio, el ingreso a una institución psiquiátrica como consecuencia de una decisión familiar, y la desventura en los afectos, que Elena Poniatowska rescata de la historia personal de la artista.

    Asimismo, se narran en la novela sus dificultades para lograr expresar su pasión artística, su oposición a la visión tradicional de su familia y el vínculo de la artista con uno de los movimientos más importantes del siglo XX, el surrealismo.
