Resumen de Primer registro de tortugas marinas en el Neógeno superior del SO de España

  Este trabajo analiza el registro fósil de tortugas en las formaciones marinas neógenas de la Cuenca del Guadalquivir (Huelva, SO España). Este registro consiste en un conjunto parcial de caparazón y varias placas aisladas de caparazón, plastrón y huesos de las extremidades. Las características óseas permiten descartar a tortugas terrestres y fluvio-lacustres y posibilita el atribuirlos a la familia Cheloniidae (tortugas marinas). Los húmeros estudiados han podido ser asignados a la especie Syllomus aegyptiacus Lydekker 1899, un Cheloniideo muy común durante el Mioceno-Plioceno, y con una distribución global. Estos restos esqueléticos constituyen la primera aparición de este grupo en el Neógeno de España y la primera cita de Syllomus en la Península Ibérica.

  This paper analyzes the fossil record of turtles in the marine neogene formations in the Guadalquivir Basin, (Huelva, SW Spain). Their fossil record consists on a partial set of carapace and isolated plates of carapace, plastron and limb bones. The bone morphology allows the exclusion of both terrestrial and fluvio-lacustrine turtles and makes it possible to attribute them to the family Cheloniidae (sea turtles). The humeri of Cheloniidae are characteristic and can be assigned to the species Syllomus aegyptiacus Lydekker, 1899, a common cheloniid during the Miocene-Pliocene with a global distribution. This record constitutes the first occurrence of this group in the Neogene of southwestern Spain and the first occurrence of Syllomus in the Iberian Peninsula.
