    What do life stories produced in interviews teach us about the contemporary history of women in the Maghreb? This article addresses this question by revisiting an ethnographic archive produced as part of research conducted between 2006 and 2010 in working-class suburbs of Casablanca, among women leaders of local neighborhood associations. The paper combines two usually opposing approaches: that of historians, who use life stories as a source in the interpretation of history, and that of sociologists and anthropologists, who are mainly interested in analyzing what ethnographic interviews teach us about the constraints and conditions experienced by the respondents at the time of the survey. The article shows how the archive in question here offers elements to understanding womenʼs participation in the public life of popular districts of the city of Casablanca since the 1960s. It does not only allow us to study current issues that face women heads of local associations in the early 2000s but also to analyze the transformation of practices, norms and power relations that make up the different social worlds through which the trajectory of the respondents proceeded over time. In a final step of analysis, this article demonstrates how the stories gathered from women representing Morocco’s socio-economic and institutional margins allow for theoretical and conceptual reflections on key themes related to the study of gender in societies of the Maghreb.

    Que nous enseignent les récits de vie produits en situation d’entretien sur l’histoire contemporaine des femmes au Maghreb? Cet article aborde cette question en revisitant une archive ethnographique produite dans le cadre d’une recherche menée entre 2006 et 2010 dans la banlieue populaire de Casablanca, auprès de femmes dirigeant des associations de quartier. Deux approches habituellement opposées sont ici combinées: celle des historiens qui utilisent les récits de vie comme des sources pour interpréter l’histoire et celle des sociologues et anthropologues qui s’intéressent surtout à ce que les entretiens ethnographiques nous apprennent sur les contraintes et conditions dans lesquelles s’inscrivent les enquêté(e)s au moment de l’enquête. L’article montre comment l’archive ainsi analysée nous offre des éléments pour saisir la participation des femmes à la vie publique dans des quartiers populaires de la ville de Casablanca depuis les années 1960. Elle nous permet non seulement d’étudier les “enjeux du présent” de femmes qui dirigent des associations au début des années 2000. Elle nous permet aussi d’analyser la transformation de pratiques, normes et rapports de pouvoir qui constituent les différents mondes sociaux dans lesquels s’est construit la trajectoire des enquêtées au fil du temps. A un dernier niveau d’analyse, cet article montre comment des récits rassemblés auprès de femmes situées aux marges socio-économiques et institutionnelles du Maroc, permettent d’alimenter la réflexion plus théorique et conceptuelle sur des thématiques clefs qui se rapportent à l’étude des rapports de genre dans les sociétés du Maghreb.
