Resumen de Artistas franceses en Río de Janeiro y la construcción de un ambiente artístico paralelo a la Academia de Bellas Artes (1840-1884)

La segunda mitad del siglo XIX está marcada por la presencia de muchos artistas extranjeros en Río de Janeiro, especialmente franceses. Desde 1840 enviaban sus obras para exponer en la Academia Imperial de Bellas Artes y así se integraron al ambiente artístico oficial, ganaron premios y condecoraciones y divulgaron sus trabajos a la sociedad. Si bien las exposiciones oficiales de la Academia constituían para ellos un importante instrumento de inclusión cultural y artística, también actuaban paralelamente a esta institución. Durante el gobierno de Pedro II, notamos por medio de la prensa un gran número de noticias sobre la participación de artistas franceses en exposiciones privadas, subastas benéficas, trabajos en talleres privados, venta de obras y apertura de escuelas de arte. En este conjunto, se destacan los grabadores Louis Boulanger y Sébastien Sisson y los hermanos pintores François y Louis Moreaux. Discutiremos sus aportes al desarrollo de este ambiente artístico paralelo a la Academia y demostraremos la existencia de pedidos públicos y privados y de un mercado de arte en crecimiento, elementos absolutamente fundamentales para la formación del gusto y la afirmación social del artista en Brasil.

The second half of the 19th century is marked by the presence of many foreigners in Rio de Janeiro, especially the French. From 1840, they sent their works to exhibit at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, integrating the offcial artistic environment, winning prizes and publicizing their works for the society. If the social exhibitions of the Academy were an important instrument of cultural and artistic inclusion, they performed alongside this institution. During the government of Pedro II, we know through the press a large number of news about their actions in private exhibitions, charity auctions, their works in private studios, sale of works and opening of art schools. In this set, we highlight the engravers Louis Boulanger and Sébastien Sisson, and the painters Francçois Moreaux and Louis Moreaux. We will discuss their actions in the development of this artistic environment parallel to the Academy, demonstrating the existence of public and private orders for a growing art market, absolutely essential elements for the formation of taste and the social armation of the artist in Brazil.
