    La cuestión franciscana fue un movimiento histórico-literatio sobre las fuentes y biografías de San Francisco, iniciado a fines del siglo XIX y que movilizó a diversos intelectuales en Europa. En Chile, este movimiento fue conocido y difundido por los miembros de la Primera Orden, especialmente, en la Provincia de la Santísima Trinidad, y los adherentes al santo de Asís. Con una innovación, las fuentes y el el discernimiento sobre los franciscanistas eran usados e interpretados a la luz de los conflictos eclesiales y sociales del país, en donde, la imagen de san Francisco estaba en disputa con los liberales y socialistas.

    The Franciscan Question was an historical-literary movement concerned with the sources and biographies of St. Francis, beginning towards the end of the nineteenth century, initiated and carried forward by a certain number of European intellectuals. In Chile, this movement was known, and in turn furthered, by the members of the First Order, especially in the Province of the Most Holy Trinity, and by other followers of the Saint of Assisi. Rather innovatively, the sources and the insights of the "Franciscanists" were used and interpreted in the perspective of that country's ecclesial and social conflicts, where the image of St. Francis was a matter of dispute with liberals and socialists.
