Alimentos modificados genéticamente: La polémica sobre el arroz dorado

    La revolución de la genómica y la biotecnología moderna ha generado y seguirá generando muchos dilemas éticos y sociales y, por tanto, muchas polémicas. Las discusiones acerca de la innovación en agricultura han ido en aumento en los últimos 50 años, especialmente desde la introducción de los cultivos modificados genéticamente. Distintos argumentos se han puesto de manifiesto con el objetivo de apoyar las opiniones sobre el modo en el cual la agricultura debería desarrollarse en un futuro. El resultado ha llevado a un profundo debate que ha dividido a la opinión pública en grupos pro y anti- biotecnología. Uno de los principales centros donde actualmente se concentra esta disputa es precisamente en uno de estos cultivos que busca una mejora nutricional debido al aumento en aporte de vitamínico, el arroz dorado (Golden Rice). Es una variedad en la cual se insertan dos genes a través de las técnicas de Ingeniería Genética y tiene como resultado aumentar en los granos la cantidad de β-caroteno. Se piensa que esta variedad serviría para paliar endemismos en poblaciones juveniles como la ceguera, al mismo tiempo que disminuiría la malnutrición infantil y la desnutrición. El intento de aprobar y poder cultivar en diferentes países un cultivo genéticamente modificado como el arroz dorado ha suscitado una gran polémica. La reciente aprobación de su cultivo en Australia nos permite suponer que no serán sus defensores u opositores sino las comunidades locales las que determinen su futuro

    Genetic revolution, as well as modern biotechnology, has raised and will continue to raise many ethic and social issues and for that matter, a number of controversies. Debates on agricultural innovation have increased in the last fifty years due to the introduction of the genetically modified crops. Varied arguments have been put forward with the aim of supporting the way in which agriculture and farming should be scientifically developed in the future. As a result, a heated debate has divided public opinion into two groups: those standing for and against biotechnology. One of the main topics of this heated debate is the genetically modified variety of rice called Golden Rice owing to its high vitamin content that may result into quality improved nutrition. It is a variety in which two genes have been inserted by means of genetic engineering techniques and whose target is to increase the amount of β- carotene in the grain. It is argued that this variety will be the solution not just for blindness but also as a means of reducing malnutrition as well as undernourishment among the child population. The idea of endorsing and putting into practice the cultivation of a genetically modified crop such as Golden Rice in different countries has raised the controversy to higher levels. The recent approval of growing Golden Rice in Australia will lead us to the conclusion that its success and future will not depend either on the opponents or the sympathisers, but on the local communities
