The reciprocal excommunication between the patriarch of Constantinople Michael Cellularius (1043-58) and the papal legacy Humbert of Silva Candida (1049-61) marked the division of the Christian churches. The controversy started in epistle sent by Archbishop Leo of Ohrid to Archbishop John of Trani still in 1053. This article aims to revisit the first versions of the Leo of Ohrid epistle, identifying the place of the Bulgarian See in this communication network about azymes bread and Sabbath.

A excomunhão entre o patriarca de Constantinopla Miguel Cerulário (1043-58) e o legado papal Humberto de Silva Cândida (1049-61) marcou historicamente a divisão das igrejas cristãs. A controvérsia teve início a partir de uma exortação epistolar feita pelo arcebispo Leão de Ócrida ao arcebispo João de Trani ainda em 1053. Nosso objetivo neste artigo é revisitar as primeiras versões grega e latina da epístola atribuída à Leão de Ócrida, identificando o lugar da Sé Búlgara nesta rede de comunicação e debate sobre o pão ázimo e o hábito de guardar os sábados
