    The relation of history and the social sciences to documentation, that is, to all the material—texts, figures, artifacts, images, speech, etc.—produced and passed on by a society, has evolved considerably over the past two decades. Documents are no longer viewed as simple repositories of information on the social world. Their existence has been denaturalized, especially through critique of the metaphorical dimension of words such as “sources,” “data,” or “testimony.” To resituate the construction and historicity of documents, and to measure how they themselves shape scholarship, has become a central issue in the social sciences. This holistic approach to documentation is an invitation to write history at a scale where observation is constructively adapted to the existing sources—whether abundant or rare, representative or fragmentary—and with the tools best suited to their study. By explicitly integrating the analysis of documentation into scholarly writing, by uncovering the sociohistorical conditions of the creation of the materials studied, this new relation to documents leads to a redefinition of the ontological and narrative dimensions of social science research and to a reflexive interrogation of its relationship to referentiality.

    Le rapport entretenu par l’histoire et les sciences sociales avec la documentation, comprise comme l’ensemble des matériaux – textes, chiffres, artefacts, images, paroles, etc. – produits et transmis par une société, a considérablement évolué au cours des vingt dernières années. Les documents ne sont plus considérés comme de simples dépôts d’informations sur le monde social, dans lesquels il suffirait de venir puiser. La documentation a été l’objet d’un processus de dénaturalisation, critiquant la dimension métaphorique des termes comme « sources », « données », « data » ou « témoignage ». Restituer la construction de la documentation et son historicité, en mesurant la manière dont ces dernières orientent l’écriture scientifique, est devenu un problème primordial de la recherche en sciences sociales. Cette approche holistique de la documentation engage à écrire une histoire dont l’échelle d’observation est déterminée de manière plastique par les documents existants – abondants ou rares, représentatifs ou fragmentaires – et par les outils permettant de les traiter. En intégrant explicitement l’analyse de la documentation à l’écriture scientifique, en exposant les conditions sociohistoriques d’élaboration des matériaux mobilisés, ce nouveau rapport aux documents invite à redéfinir les dimensions ontologique et narrative du travail des sciences sociales et à réinterroger de manière réflexive leur rapport à la référentialité.
