    In literature the presence of the divine has changed over the centuries. We find powerful gods, pagans and Christians, a fearful God who will judge, the God who gives meaning to existence and the nonexistent God. In the 20th cen-tury, literature influenced by the philosophical current of Existentialism faces the existence of human being, questioning the (non)existence of the divine, (non)existence of God. The Portuguese author, Vergílio Ferreira, published especially in the second half of the 20th century. He sets out a dialogue between the being and the divine through the evidence of the invisible and the unspeakable of faith. This happens in a narrative that does not say, but it is felt. His novels without a complete and structured story, and an increasingly lyrical prose, present the protagonist’s “I” who undergoes a process of self-knowledge while the reader puts in order the thoughts and memories about the relationship of this “I” with others. It is the reader who ends the novel, imagining the word, the sentence, the idea that never gets to be said, giving the narrative one of the various meanings that shows the thinking and feeling of a believing “I”.

    A presença do divino ao longo dos séculos foi-se transformando na literatura. Encontramos os deuses poderosos, pagãos e cristãos, um Deus temível que há de julgar, o Deus que dá sentido à existência e o Deus inexistente. No século XX, a literatura influenciada pela corrente filosófica do Existencialismo enfrenta-se à existência do ser, questionando a (in)existência do divino, de Deus. Vergílio Ferreira, autor português, essencialmente, da segunda metade do século XX, abre um diálogo entre o ser e o divino através da evidência do invisível e do indizível da fé numa narrativa que não diz, mas que se sente. Sem uma história com princípio, meio e fim, e uma prosa cada vez mais lírica, os seus romances apresentam o “eu” do protagonista que sofre um processo de autognose acompanhado pelo leitor, que vai ordenando o pensamento e a memória sobre a relação do “eu” com os outros. É o leitor que termina o romance, imaginando a palavra, a frase, a ideia que nunca se chega a dizer, atribuindo um dos múltiplos sentidos à narrativa que mostra o pensamento e o sentir de um “eu” crente.
