    This article presents the imaginary present in the Sermon on the Good Success of the Arms of Portugal against those of Holland, by Father Antonio Vieira. The objective is to promote a contextualized reading of the sermon consi-dering the religious imagery of the time, the colonial period in which Father Vieira lived. In order to reach this goal, the notion of the founding myth of Brazilian society and the Portuguese world is considered through a bibliographical rese-arch of historical bias and analytic “journey” by the sermon itself. The founding myth consists of three elements: a symbolic elaboration called “East” - a blessed place, a “vision of paradise”; an understanding of history sustained by God’s will and realization of biblical prophecies, and a medieval understanding of the governor’s figure as “king by the will of God”. The colonial imaginary has as tripod the Will, the Word and the Work of God. The article provides a “journey” through the parts of the Sermon from the perspective of the imaginary, abstrac-ting from the text the movements of the speaker and the scenario in which it occurs: the Church of Our Lady of Help, in the City of Bahia (Salvador) - at the same time that Brazil was about to see a Netherlander invasion.

    Este artigo apresenta o imaginário presente no Sermão pelo Bom Sucesso das Armas de Portugal contra as de Holanda, de Padre Antonio Vieira. O objetivo é promover uma leitura contextualizada do sermão considerando o imaginário religioso da época, o período colonial em que viveu Padre Vieira. Para alcançar este objetivo, é considerada a noção do mito fundador da sociedade brasileira e do mundo português por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica de viés histórico e "viagem" analítica pelo próprio sermão. O mito fundador é constituído por três elementos: uma elaboração simbólica chamada “Oriente” – lugar abençoado, uma “visão do paraíso”; uma compreensão da história sustentada pela vontade de Deus e realização das profecias bíblicas, e, uma compreensão medieval da figura do governante como “rei pela vontade de Deus”. O imaginário colonial tem como tripé a Vontade, a Palavra e a Obra de Deus. O artigo proporciona uma “viagem” pelos tomos do Sermão na perspectiva do imaginário, abstraindo do texto os movimentos do orador e o cenário em que ocorre: a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, na Cidade da Bahia (Salvador) – na mesma ocasião em que o Brasil estava na iminência de uma invasão holandesa.
