La infección por el Virus del Papiloma Humano (VPH) es la infección de transmisión sexual (ITS) más frecuente en el mundo. Este virus ocasiona generalmente lesiones benignas, como verrugas, pero también puede generar procesos malignos, como cáncer de cuello de útero y, menos frecuentemente, cáncer anal, vaginal y de la cavidad orofaríngea.
El cribado de cáncer de cuello de útero con citología ha tenido mucho éxito en estos últimos años, pero hay suficiente evidencia científica para que la citología haya sido sustituida por la detección microbiológica del VPH como prueba inicial. Actualmente, existen técnicas y sistemas automáticos que permiten un diagnóstico rápido y eficaz que puede usarse para la detección del VPH.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. This virus generally causes benign lesions, such as warts, but it can also cause malignant processes, such as cervical cancer and, less frequently, anal, vaginal, and oropharyngeal cavity cancer.
Cervical cancer screening with cytology has been very successful in recent years, but there is sufficient scientific evidence that cytology has been replaced by the microbiological detection of HPV as the initial test. Currently, there are automated techniques and systems that allow rapid and effective diagnosis that can be used for the detection of HPV.
