This essay deals with transnationalism as a dominant trend in American Studies, in the United States and abroad, in the first decades of the new millennium. The essay analyzes Transnational American Studies and its broader historical and theoretical frame, focusing on some of its most crucial theoretical elaborations with special regard to the role of non-US scholars. The essay also investigates the transformations occurred in the field after the last presidential elections, which are apparently reinstating the state-nation as the primary focus of interest for both the US and American Studies.

Questo saggio presenta una riflessione sulla tendenza transnazionale che ha dominato l’angloamericanistica statunitense e, di riflesso, internazionale di inizio millennio. Contestualizzando i Transnational American Studies all’interno delle vicende storiche e teoriche degli American Studies statunitensi dalla loro fondazione, il saggio si confronta con alcune delle formulazioni più autorevoli di questa riconfigurazione e ne analizza le logiche, le aporie e le condizioni storico-politiche e istituzionali, con particolare riferimento alla costruzione del campo disciplinare e alla posizione degli americanisti non statunitensi. Il saggio si interroga infine sul possibile superamento di questa volontà di apertura a seguito delle recenti elezioni presidenziali, che sembrano destinate a ricondurre gli USA – e gli American Studies con essi – a un ripiegamento sullo stato-nazione.
