  • Resumen
    • Photovoltaic energy production is nowadays one of the hottest topics in the water industry as this green energy source is becoming more and more workable in countries like Spain, with high values of irradiance. This work aims to analyse the feasibility of a standalone photovoltaic system to supply energy expenditure in the irrigation network of the University of Alicante. We use an application (UAsolar) developed to calculate the energy produced in photovoltaic arrays (using the Duffie and Beckman equations) and the energy consumption in a pressurized irrigation network. This program can be applied in the water sector by students, practitioners, and decision-makers as a tool to minimise energy production in solar-powered water systems and energy consumption. Users can achieve results with limited computational time. The results pointed out that the payback period is around 10 years, an adequate period as compared to the lifespan of the PV units (25 years). This work also indicated that the utility manager can collect 5000 EUR per year with the photovoltaic supply and close to 70000 EUR in 25 years.
