    Desde su presentación a la comunidad científica a inicios del siglo XX, el yacimiento de Las Mesas de Villaverde (Ardales, Málaga) fue identificado de manera mayoritaria con la ciudad andalusí de Bobastro, documentada en las fuentes escritas como baluarte de la revuelta del rebelde ʿUmar Ibn Ḥafṣūn contra el poder emiral a finales del siglo IX. En este lugar, se reconocen hoy un recinto fortificado y dos iglesias, una de ella semirrupestre. La realización de una nueva planimetría de esta última y su investigación arqueológica y geológica han permitido descifrar su proceso de construcción, confirmar su es-tado inacabado y reconocer sus usos posteriores. Los resultados permiten plantear nuevas cuestiones sobre la posible forma, función, cronología y artífices de esta singular edificación, cuya tipología nada tiene que ver con las iglesias rupestres conoci-das en al-Andalus y datadas en fechas similares

    Since its scientific discovery in the early 20th century, the site of Las Mesas de Villaverde (Ardales, Málaga) was identified with the andalusi town of Bobastro, this one recorded by the written documents as the bastion of the rebel ʿUmar Ibn Ḥafṣūn against the Emirate power at the end of the 9th century. This site is currently composed by a fortified enclosure and two churches, one of it a half rock-cut example. The updated drawing survey of the latter along with its archaeological and geological analysis have made it possible to decode its building process, to confirm its unfinished state, and to approach its later uses. Outputs enable besides opening new questions regarding the likely form, function, chronology and artisans of this exceptional complex, of which typology has nothing to do with the rock-cut churches known in al-Andalus and thought to be coeval
