Do surgimento do novel inglês à publicação de Nutshell (2016) de Ian McEwan: atualizações do romance nas Literaturas de Língua Inglesa

    This work brings an historical overview related to the novel as a literary genre, focusing on the Literatures in English. Thus, the phases of the English novel, also known as novel, were characterized, since its origins in the XVII and XVIII centuries to the period in which the so-called postmodern novel was created. Then, some reflections on Ian McEwan's (1948-) novel Nutshell (2016) were presented to address what is called the updates on the novel as a literary genre in the contemporaneity. In summary, the main purpose of this article was to demonstrate how McEwan recreates the novel as a literary genre with Nutshell. There is also the aim of supporting the relevance of this work to the Literary Studies in English, focusing on Mckeon’s (1987 e 2000) and Lukács’ (2000) theories of the novel, as well as Hutcheon’s (1991), Eagleton’s (1997), McHale’s (1992), Nicol’s (2015) and and Fernandes’ (2007) researches on Post-Modernism, and the idea of adaptation by Hutcheon (2006) and intertextuality by Allen (2000).

    Este trabalho traz um panorama histórico relacionado ao gênero literário romance, com foco nas Literaturas de Língua Inglesa. Assim, as principais fases do romance inglês, também conhecido como novel, são caracterizadas, passando por sua origem nos séculos XVII e XVIII até a fase do surgimento do chamado romance pós-moderno. Em seguida, algumas reflexões sobre Nutshell (2016a), de Ian McEwan (1948-), são apresentadas para tratar do que chamamos de atualizações do gênero literário romance na contemporaneidade. Em resumo, o objetivo principal deste artigo foi o de demonstrar de que forma McEwan recria o gênero romance com a obra Enclausurado, título da edição traduzida em língua portuguesa (2016b). Pretendemos ainda endossar a relevância de Enclausurado para os Estudos Literários de Língua Inglesa, com foco nas teorias de Mckeon (1987 e 2000) e Lukács (2000) acerca do gênero romance, também dos estudos de Hutcheon (1991), Eagleton (1997), McHale (1992), Nicol (2015) e Fernandes (2007) sobre o Pós-Modernismo e dos conceitos de adaptação de Hutcheon (2006) e de intertextualidade de Allen (2000).
