El presente trabajo aborda la definición del execrable problema de la trata de seres humanos. Comienza con el análisis del concepto de trata de seres humanos y sus elementos a través de la normativa internacional y europea del siglo XXI. A continuación, aborda las similitudes, diferencias y conexiones con el tráfico de personas. Además, se revisan los problemas para su medición y los datos que, en diversos ámbitos, se manejan para observar su evolución. Por último, se apuntan los cambios y retos que la era digital, y, también, la pandemia de COVID-19 plantean a la respuesta y lucha contra la trata de seres humanos.

This paper addresses the definition of the heinous problem of trafficking in human beings. It starts with an analysis of the concept of trafficking in human beings and its elements through 21st century international and European regulations. It then discusses the similarities, differences, and connections with human trafficking. In addition, it reviews the problems of measurement and the data that are used in various fields to observe its evolution. Finally, it points out the changes and challenges that the digital era, and also the COVID-19 pandemic, pose to the response and fight against human trafficking
