    En noviembre de 1970 se publicó La ciudad de Mario Levrero por la editorial Tierra Nueva de Montevideo. El año anterior la novela había obtenido el segundo premio en un concurso del semanario Marcha. Marcha iba a publicar el libro, pero, por motivos que estudiaremos en este artículo, finalmente la edición no prosperó. Entretanto apareció un joven editor, fanático de la ciencia ficción, que decidió ponerse la tarea al hombro. Con la excusa del 50.° aniversario de La ciudad, seguimos los pasos de Varlotta Levrero desde la escritura hasta la publicación de su primera novela.

    In november 1970 Mario Levrero´s La ciudad was published by Tierra Nueva publishing house in Montevideo. The previous year the novel had obtained the second prize in a contest of the weekly Marcha. Marcha was going to publish the book, but, for reasons that we will study in this article, the edition finally did not prosper, Meanwhile, a young editor appeared —a science fiction fanatic— who decided to shoulder the task. With the excuse of the 50th anniversary of La ciudad, we follow in the footsteps of Varlotta Levrero from the writing to the publication of his first novel.
