David Hume y Adam Smith: Semejanzas y diferencias en torno a la simpatía

    El artículo presenta y contrasta el papel central de la simpatía en las teorías morales de Hume y Smith a lo largo de cinco puntos: 1) la simpatía como «fuente principal de las distinciones morales» y como contrapunto al egoísmo, 2) el papel auxiliar de la razón, 3) el mecanismo imaginativo que sustenta la simpatía, 4) el sesgo de parcialidad que la caracteriza y, por ello mismo, 5) la necesidad de corrección reconocida por Hume con «el punto de vista estable y general» y por Smith con «el espectador imparcial». Por último, revisa la noción de «simpatía» de ambos autores a la luz de algunas aportaciones psicológicas contemporáneas en torno a la «empatía», valorando la contribución de Smith como gran teórico de la adopción de perspectiva imaginativa en todas sus variantes.

    This article presents and contrasts the central role of sympathy in the moral theories of Hume and Smith through five points: 1) the sympathy as the «main source of moral distinctions” and as a counterpoint to selfishness, 2) the auxiliary role of reason, 3) the imaginative mechanism of sympathy, 4) the bias to the partiality that characterizes this mechanism and, therefore, 5) the need for correction recognized by Hume with the «steady and general point of view», and by Smith with the «impartial spectator». Finally, the text reviews the notion of sympathy used by both authors following some contemporary psychological contributions about «empathy», and evaluating the contribution of Smith as the great theorist of the imaginative perspective-taking in all its variants.
