Elx es va convertir, durant el segle xix, en un dels llocs d’aturada obligada en les rutes dels viatgers europeus que visitaven la península Ibèrica. El seu bosc de palmeres i la fisomia del seu paisatge natural i urbà els recordava el paisatge dels oasis del nord d’Àfrica i del Pròxim Orient. Era com trobar-se el jardí de l’Edén, el paradís perdut, però gairebé a tocar de casa, sense haver de fer un viatge llarg, penós i, en ocasions, perillós. Els llibres i les publicacions periòdiques europees que tractaven sobre viatges, geografia, etnografia i curiositats d’arreu del món, reservaven molt freqüentment un espai al nostre poble, amb descripcions i gravats que ens donen un testimoni extraordinari de l’Elx del segle XIX i de la primera meitat del XX. Els gravats, a més, són d’una bellesa excepcional, i poques poblacions del món han tingut la sort de comptar amb un patrimoni iconogràfic tan destacable i continuat en el temps. Aquest treball pretén donar compte del màxim possible d’aquests testimonis escrits i dels gravats que l’acompanyen. En aquesta primera part es recolliran les publicacions i gravats que van des de finals del segle xviii fins al 1870, moment en què apareix en escena la fotografia.

During the 19th century, Elche became one of the obligatory stops on the routes of European travelers visiting the Iberian Peninsula. Its palm gloves and the physiognomy of its natural and urban landscape reminded them of the panorama of the oases of North Africa and the Middle East. It was like finding the Garden of Eden, the lost paradise, but almost at home, without having to make a long, painful, and sometimes dangerous journey. European books and periodicals dealing with travel, geography, ethnography, and curiosities from all over the world, very often reserved a space for our town, with descriptions and engravings that give us an extraordinary witness of the Elche of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. The engravings, moreover, are of exceptional beauty, and few towns in the world have been lucky enough to have such an outstanding and continuous iconographic heritage. This work aims to give the maximum possible account of these written witnesses and the engravings that follow them. In this first part, publications and prints from the late 18th century to 1870, when photo-graphy appeared on the scene, will be collected.
