Un motivo literario habitual en la producción de los autores scapigliati, como ejemplifica el caso de Carlo Dossi, es la aparición involuntaria de una mancha en la página que se está escribiendo. Si bien en ocasiones la mancha cumple una función meramente humorística, su aparición implica siempre una problemática y multiforme asimilación: la mancha puede ser un simple tema literario, pero también una invitación a una mayor participación por parte del lector —quien se ve obligado a completar la obra— o, finalmente, un obstáculo o impedimento en el propio proceso creativo. A ello se añade, desde una perspectiva histórica, su evidente relación con ciertos gustos estéticos (especialmente presentes en los contemporáneos pintores macchiaoli) por la obra no acabada y por la reflexión que se genera en torno a los subjetivos procesos de creación y recepción de las obras de arte.

A common literary motif in the production of scapigliati authors, as exemplified by the case of Carlo Dossi, is the involuntary appearance of a stain on the page that is being written. Although the stain sometimes fulfills a merely humorous function, its appearance always implies a problematic and multifaceted assimilation: the stain can be a simple literary theme, but also an invitation to a greater participation by the reader —who is forced to complete the work— or, finally, an obstacle or impediment in the creative process itself. Besides that, from a historical perspective, the use of stain as a literary motif shows also an evident relationship with some aesthetic taste (especially present in contemporary macchiaoli painters) for the unfinished work and the reflection that is generated around the subjective processes of creation and reception of the artworks.
