De lo sagrado a lo profano: la chicha de jora

    A socio-historical marker of the Andean cosmovision, the sacred drink of the Incas was reserved for ritual ceremonies offered to Pachamama or Mother Earth. It was also grafted onto the mythical, through cycles, from those of IIIlapa Chuquilla, the entity of thunder, to the cycle of Mama Sara, in which libations of chicha were celebrated.

    In the 1950s, the impact of chicha was redistributed, no longer on a metaphysical level, but on an earthlier level.

    This is how the sacred chicha became the profane chicha, moving to another cultural field: that of music. In other words, it took on a new identity under another name, that of 'chicha culture', a mixture that metaphorised the confrontation between the highlands and the coast.

    Marcador socio histórico de la cosmovisión andina, la bebida sagrada de los incas era reservada para las ceremonias rituales que se ofrecían a la Pachamama o Madre Tierra. También se injertó en lo mítico, a través de ciclos, desde los de IIIlapa Chuquilla , entidad del trueno, hasta el ciclo de la Mama Sara, en que se celebraban libaciones de chicha. En los años 50, se redistribuyó el impacto de la chicha ya no a un nivel metafísico, sino a otro nivel más terrenal. Es así como la chicha sagrada vino a ser la chicha profana, desplazándose a otro campo cultural: el de la música o sea que vino a tomar una nueva identidad bajo otra determinación, la de ‘cultura chicha’, una mezcla que metaforizaba el enfrentamiento entre lo serrano y lo costeño.
