Resumen de The exuberant imagination: blood libel and the myth of Maya ritual murder in the 1562 Sotuta confessions

Alejandro Enriquez

  • This article examines the 1562 Sotuta confessions of Maya ritual murder during the Idolatry Trials orchestrated by Friar Diego de Landa in colonial Yucatán. Through an analysis of their discursive production, their constitutive elements, and their comparison to other European, Christian anti-Semitic tales, this essay argues that the confessions of Maya blasphemous crucifixion and human sacrifice are better understood as Franciscan blood libel and ritual murder propaganda against the Maya elites
