Las Unidades Sanitarias: Un modelo ejemplar en la evolución histórica de la salud pública en Costa Rica

    Debido a la escasa información, así como, la poca recopilación anecdótica e histórica de las Unidades sanitarias en Costa Rica, han generado el desconocimiento hacia su fundamental importancia en la historia del desarrollo de los servicios de salud, particularmente, el papel protagónico de éstas en la Salud Pública de nuestro país.

    Las Unidades Sanitarias reflejaron la transición de los cambios de las políticas públicas del Sistema de Salud de Costa Rica, con evolución de más de un siglo, consistía en una atención enfocada en organizaciones de caridad y beneficencia, que posteriormente, fue brindada por la Protección Social a través del Estado Costarricense.

    En los años setenta con la universalización y el traspaso de los Hospitales de la Junta de Salud y sus funciones hacia la Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social, las Unidades Sanitarias forman parte de la política estatal en la cobertura de la protección y atención de salud, porque ésta cubría aquellas poblaciones que no fueron protegidas inicialmente por la Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social, formando así, parte del fundamento de la universalización del acceso a la salud que se inició en 1961 siendo uno de los hitos más importantes en la historia del Sistema Sanitario Costarricense.

    Due to the scarce information, as well as the little anecdotal and historical compilation of the Health Units in Costa Rica, they have generated ignorance about their fundamental importance in the history of the development of health services, particularly, the leading role of these in the Public Health of our country.

    The Health Units reflected the transition of the changes in public policies of the Health System of Costa Rica, with evolution of more than a century, consisted of a focus on charitable and charitable organizations, which was subsequently provided by the Social Protection through the Costa Rican State.

    In the seventies with the universalization and transfer of the Hospitals of the Board of Health and their functions to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, the Health Units are part of the State policy in the coverage of health protection and care, because this covered those populations that were not initially protected by the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, thus forming part of the foundation of the universalization of access to health that began in 1961 being one of the most important milestones in the history of the Costa Rican Health System.
