    Desde finales del siglo XV hasta la coronación de Isabel I en 1558, las relaciones entre la Corona inglesa y la monarquía hispánica fueron cordiales a pesar de las dificultades por las que atravesaron, por ejemplo, tras el divorcio de Enrique VIII de Catalina de Aragón y el cisma de la Iglesia de Inglaterra con Roma. Como prueba de esta alianza destacan las dos intervenciones militares que llevaron a cabo sendos contingentes ingleses en ayuda de las tropas hispánicas: uno en el norte de España con la intención de conquistar la Gascuña en 1512, y el otro en los Países Bajos durante la campaña de San Quintín en 1557.

    Since the end of the XVth century until the crowning of Elizabeth I in 1558, the relationship between the English Crown and the Spanish Monarchy was friendly in spite of some aroused problems: the divorce of Henry VIII from Katherine of Aragon and the schism of the English Church from Rome. As examples of this alliance stand out two military interventions of English contingents in support of the Spanish troops. The first of them campaigned in the north of Spain with the aim of conquering the Gascony in 1512; the second fought in the Low Countries during Saint Quentin campaign in 1557.
