The narrowing of the curriculum and the “schoolification” in Early Childhood Education, has generated various tensions and changes between these demands and the principles of democracy, equity and participation. Supported by the Sociologies of Childhood and Education and The narrowing of the curriculum and the “schoolification” in Early Childhood Education, has generated various tensions and changes between these demands and the principles of democracy, equity and participation. Supported by the Sociologies of Childhood and Education and Educational Sciences, we signal the presence of these speeches in the public polices for Early Childhood Education in Portugal and their resignification by educators in their pedagogical practices. Using play as an analyser, the observations made in kindergartens, public and private in Lisbon, Oporto and Braga, between 2016 and March 2020, allow us to highlight the “weight” of schooling in the face of playing as a right and mode of child participation, and in reconfiguration of children in pupils, educators in teachers and the kindergarten in primary school.
