En 1967, Seymour Martin Lipset y Stein Rokkan teorizaron el concepto de «división» en el ámbito político. Estas divisiones, que constituyen claras líneas de demarcación social con reflejo político, se manifiestan en espacios circunscritos, el Estado-nación. La pérdida de peso de las comunidades, el debilitamiento de las fronteras territoriales y la desestructuración de las identidades sociales o políticas diversifican los comportamientos y amplían los conflictos políticos, dando lugar a la posibilidad de que surjannuevas fracturas y a ciertas reformulaciones de la teoría de las divisiones.

In 1967, Seymour Martin Lipset and Stein Rokkan theorized the notion of cleavage in the political field. As strong social dividing lines that translate politically, cleavages appear in a clearly marked territory, the nation state. The shrinkage of communities, the weakening of territorial delimitations and the unstructuring of societal or political identities have tended to diversify behaviours and broaden political conflicts, giving birth to possible new cleavages and to certain reformulations of the cleavage theory.

Lignes de démarcation sociale forte qui se traduisent politiquement, les clivages s’expriment dans des espaces circonscrits, l’État-nation. L’amenuisement des communautés, l’affaiblissement des délimitations territoriales et la déstructuration d’identités sociétales ou politiques diversifient les comportements et élargissent les conflits politiques, donnant naissance à de possibles nouveaux clivages et à certaines reformulations de la théorie des clivages.
