  El Desastre de Annual (1921) es sin duda el hecho más relevante de nuestra historia militar reciente por sus connotaciones castrenses y políticas. A menudo, se ha culpado de la derrota, con acierto, a factores como la ineficacia del sistema estratégico español, la ineptitud de los oficiales superiores o las desfavorables condiciones del terreno. Es necesario añadir que la llegada tardía de España al concierto internacional en el reparto de África, debido a la existencia previa de un imperio de Ultramar, condujo a que nuestro país quedara relegado a las zonas menos fértiles y hostiles del continente; también la posición de España en el orden multinacional de finales del siglo XIX junto al auge de las grandes potencias afectó a la autoestima y a la profesionalidad y eficacia de las tropas. Por todo ello, en todas y cada una de las dificultades y de los errores cometidos en el seno castrense, así como la brutalidad de los rifeños con las tropas españolas, el soldado de a pie fue el que sufrió el terrible desenlace. Por consiguiente, el objeto del siguiente artículo es reflexionar y relacionar una serie de hitos que, a nuestro juicio, fueron claves para entender el Desastre de Annual y que aparecieron en las décadas precedentes lanzando preclaros avisos de lo que podía ocurrir.

  The Annual Disaster (1921) is undoubtedly the most relevant event in our recent military history due to its military and political connotations. The defeat has often been rightly blamed on factors such as the inefficiency of the Spanish strategic system, the ineptitude of senior officers and the unfavourable conditions of the terrain. It should be added that Spain's late arrival on the international scene in the division of Africa, due to the previous existence of an overseas empire, meant that our country was relegated to the least fertile and hostile areas of the continent; Spain's position in the multinational order of the late 19th century, together with the rise of the great powers, also affected the self-esteem and the professionalism and effectiveness of the troops. For all these reasons, in each one of the difficulties and mistakes committed within the military, as well as the brutality of the Rifians towards the Spanish troops, it was the foot soldier who suffered the terrible outcome. Consequently, the purpose of the following article is to reflect on and relate a series of milestones which, in our opinion, were key to understanding the Annual Disaster and which appeared in the preceding decades, giving clear warnings of what could happen.
