Durante los últimos años la figura del rey en el Antiguo Régimen ha sido objeto de estudio. Desde diversos enfoques se ha abordado este tópico en el que particularmente ha interesado el concepto del monarca ausente y su representación como estrategia propagandística y de cohesión, en el caso de los reinos americanos. Sin embargo, el tema de la moneda y la efigie presente ha pasado desapercibido. Esta investigación se ocupa de dichas efigies en la moneda novohispana y los sucesos que se vivieron para su implementación en la Real Casa de Moneda de México. Las distancias y las constantes aprobaciones por parte de la Metrópoli fue la problemática que dificultó muchos de estos procesos. Además, se ha podido advertir que las piezas obedecen a un modelo de rey sacralizado influenciado particularmente por las medallas de Luis XIV en Francia.

In recent years the figure of the king in the Old Regime has been studied. From various approaches it has addressed this topic has interested particularly in the case of the American kingdoms figure of the absent king and its representation as a propaganda strategy and cohesion. However, the issue of the currency and the effigy present in it has gone unnoticed. This research deals with the effigies present in the New Spain coin and the events that were experienced for implementation at the Royal Mint of Mexico. The distances and constant approvals from the Mother Country were the main problems that hindered in many cases these processes. Moreover, it has been noted that the pieces obey a sacred king model influenced by the medals, particularly those of Louis XIV in France.
